Most Diablo 4 build guides show the payoff: fast clears, steady damage, and a character tuned for endgame. They often give less attention to the cost of a seasonal effect that also makes you more vulnerable. Season 15's Iconic Powers are worth planning around, not simply accepting as free damage. Before changing your setup or looking through Diablo IV Items, decide which activity you actually plan to run and whether your defenses can handle the matching risk.
Pick for the Activity You Play
Each Prime Evil path connects its Iconic Power to a different group of activities. Diablo's path affects Helltide and Infernal Hordes, where enemy density makes area damage and repeated waves relevant. Baal's path applies to The Undercity and Lair Bosses, where positioning and target priority can matter more. Mephisto's path affects The Pit and Nightmare Dungeons, which are useful places to judge how consistently your build handles tougher encounters.
The practical choice is not which path sounds strongest in isolation. It is which one supports the work you are doing now. A character set up for Helltide farming may get little immediate value from a path tied to another activity, even if that path suits a later goal.
◆ Farming Helltide or Infernal Hordes? Consider whether Diablo's area pressure complements the way your build clears groups.
◆ Running The Undercity or Lair Bosses? Choose with controlled fights and the danger of focused attacks in mind.
◆ Pushing The Pit or Nightmare Dungeons? Judge Mephisto's path alongside your ability to sustain damage and survive longer encounters.
Count the Defensive Cost
Carrying a Splinter periodically releases an Iconic Power associated with its Prime Evil, but it also increases your vulnerability to that Prime Evil. Diablo deals Fire damage, Baal deals Cold damage, and Mephisto deals Physical damage. That pairing changes how the bonus feels in practice: extra damage is less useful if the added exposure makes a difficult run unreliable.
Check your defenses before committing to a path. If the associated damage type is already a weak point, account for it before pushing content near your current limit. A vulnerability that barely matters during easier farming can become the reason a run falls apart when enemies hit harder. There is no need to overcorrect for every activity; focus on the content you intend to play and whether you are surviving it consistently.
◆ Review your resistance and other defensive coverage for the matching damage type.
◆ If deaths interrupt progress, address survivability before treating the Iconic Power as a damage upgrade.
◆ Reassess after changing activities; a setup comfortable for farming may not suit a harder push.
Spend Reputation Where It Pays Off
Each Prime Evil reputation track has eight activity modifiers and six Iconic Power upgrades. Reputation progress does not have to mean rushing every reward. Look at the modifiers and upgrades that affect the activities you actually repeat, then prioritize the track that supports that routine. Diablo's track may be more useful while your play time centers on Helltide and Infernal Hordes; Mephisto's may fit better when your focus shifts to The Pit or Nightmare Dungeons.
Changing direction has a cost in effort, so avoid switching paths just because another activity becomes briefly appealing. The largest Waking Nightmares provide a way to obtain another Splinter and pursue a different reputation track. Treat that option as a deliberate change in your farming plan, not a reason to divide your progress without a clear purpose.
Make the Power Fit Your Plan
Iconic Power works best as one part of an activity-specific setup. Match the Prime Evil to your current goal, check the related vulnerability, and put reputation into rewards that improve the content you run most. If a different path better supports your next objective, plan the switch around the Splinter source rather than rebuilding on impulse. That approach keeps Season 15's Prime Evil system useful without asking you to ignore its defensive cost; gear choices, including buy Diablo IV Items, should support the same plan rather than distract from it.
